Baseball. Baseball is life. Baseball is family. Baseball is America’s pastime. Baseball IS America. We love the sounds of baseball, the smells of baseball, the stories of baseball and the history of baseball. Baseball is for the young and old. Baseball gives us joy, it plays with our emotions, it is part of our childhood and adulthood. Professional baseball, little league baseball and amateur baseball. There is no other way to say it….we love baseball!!
Many baseball fans get confused between the home of baseball and the birthplace of baseball. But there is certainly a distinction. The official birthplace of baseball is not Cooperstown, NY as many believe and some legends have it. Although it is said that unorganized baseball was played in Cooperstown by Abner Doubleday and his friends in 1839. This story was never officially proven but baseball undoubtedly originated about that time in a similar rural atmosphere. However , the official recorded birthplace of baseball is Hoboken, NJ. Elysian Fields is believed to be the site of the first organized baseball game, giving Hoboken a strong claim to be the official birthplace of baseball. On June 19, 1846, the first officially recorded, organized baseball match was played under Alexander Joy Cartwright’s rules on Hoboken’s Elysian Fields with the New York Base Ball Club defeating the Knickerbockers 23–1. The field no longer exists. It closed sometime in the 1880s. Instead a monument marks the spot where the original baseball diamond is believed to have been located. It’s exact location is 11th and Washington Streets.
So Hoboken, NJ is the official birthplace of baseball if counting the first ever organized game. However Cooperstown, NY is undoubtedly known as the home of baseball. Cooperstown, NY not only is home to the Baseball Hall of Fame which opened in 1936 but it is also home to the iconic Doubleday Field. The place where many baseball immortals, MLB hall of famers and legends have played for 100 years. And where they still continue to play in the annual Hall of Fame Classic game. The field is also host to the annual Hall of Fame Awards Presentation. The fabled nearly 10,000-seat ball field with its deep rich history is currently owned and operated by the village of Cooperstown.
Did you know that Doubleday Field is about to celebrate it’s 100th anniversary? That’s right. On September 6, 2020 will mark the 100th anniversary of the legendary baseball stadium. Wow, how amazing. See how this special day was celebrated:
